ABC News president Kimberly Godwin condemned former President Donald Trump’s comments about Black people liking him due to his indictments, calling the claim “as racist as they come” in a note to staff.

“I got indicted a second time and a third time and a fourth time and a lot of people said that that’s why the Black people like me because they have been hurt so badly and discriminated against, and they actually viewed me as I’m being discriminated against,” said Trump on Friday during a South Carolina speech to the Black Conservative Federation.

Reacting to Trump’s remarks in a note to staff on Tuesday, Godwin wrote, “No matter one’s politics, the fact that a person running for President of the United States made these remarks period – but also to a public crowd – and with so many black people present – and that they stand with him – is mind blowing. Shocking.”

She concluded, “These remarks are as racist as they come.”

Trump’s remarks were also condemned by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday.

“It is repugnant and divisive to traffic in racist stereotypes that have the effect of tearing all Americans down,” said Jean-Pierre during a White House press briefing. “And in any context, it is profane to compare the long, painful history of abuse and discrimination suffered by Black Americans to something totally different for self-serving purposes.”
