‘We Will Decide Our Future’: Jill Biden’s August Vogue Cover Has Entirely New Meaning Following Biden Debate Debacle

The August issue of Vogue magazine, previewed on Monday, features a striking image of First Lady Jill Biden wearing a white suit, in an apparent reference to the attire preferred by the suffragists of a century ago. The cover, which has been planned for some time, and its copy — “We will decide our future” — has taken on an entirely new meaning in the wake President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance, which has led to discussions about whether he should stay in the race.

Jill Biden has long been the president’s closest confidante, and according to recent reporting, she has long encouraged him to stay in the 2024 race despite frequent media appearances in which he appeared to be notably stiff, slow, and in significant decline from the candidate who won the presidency three and a half years ago.

This is the second time the magazine has put Jill Biden on the cover, the first being in July 2021. It has been in the works and went to print before Thursday’s debate. The online version of the article, however, opens with an editor’s note that brings up “discussions” of whether Joe Biden should continue his campaign:

Editor’s Note: The debate on June 27 spurred a discussion about whether President Joe Biden should remain the Democratic nominee. Dr. Jill Biden, the first lady and Vogue’s August cover subject, has fiercely defended her husband and stood by him. Reached by phone on June 30 at Camp David, where the Biden family had gathered for the weekend, she told Vogue that they “will not let those 90 minutes define the four years he’s been president. We will continue to fight.” President Biden, she added, “will always do what’s best for the country.” Whatever happens in the weeks and months between now and November, it is Dr. Biden who will remain the president’s closest confidant and advocate.

Multiple reports have surfaced over the past few days revealing Democratic insiders and elected officials are angry that Biden’s apparent decline has been effectively kept out of the public eye. Given Jill Biden’s proximity and the clear love and support she has long shown her husband, the First Lady has started to receive a lot of criticism for her alleged role in covering up the president’s condition.
