Fox’s Brit Hume Warns House Republicans They Risk Looking Like ‘A Do-Nothing Congress’

Fox News Chief Political Analyst Brit Hume said the Republican-controlled House of Representatives is running the risk of being branded a “do-nothing Congress” after the GOP’s latest legislative inaction.

After noting President Joe Biden’s poor poll numbers, Hume alluded to the fact that House Republican leadership had promised to kill a border and immigration bill crafted by Sen. James Lankford (R-OK). They said in the event of its passage in the Senate, the legislation would be “dead on arrival” in the House. The bill failed in the upper chamber. Additionally, an aid package for Israel, Taiwan, and Ukraine that passed the Senate appears poised to die in the House.

“I think the Republicans, in the meantime, however, are in danger of losing the advantage they have vis-à-vis Biden on the issue of the border and on the issue of Ukraine funding, Israel funding, funding to defend Taiwan because they are refusing to act on these measures that would deal with that,” Hume said on Wednesday’s Special Report.

He added that in light of this, Biden’s low approval ratings may be “temporary” and added:

Think of what the Republicans are doing, for example… on the border issue. They said that they wouldn’t pass aid to Ukraine and other places unless there was action on the border.

So, the Senate produced a bill negotiated by one of its most conservative Republican members on the border, which had some defects in it as compromise measures always do, and it was nonetheless the strongest border protection bill that I’ve seen in my time in Washington. And the House simply announced it was not going to take it up, so it failed even in the Senate.

Then comes this question of the measures for the funding of Ukraine and elsewhere. And that looks like it’s going to go down in the House as well even though it passed the Senate. So, I think these are a couple of issues that put Republicans in peril of looking like literally a do-nothing Congress, which is something you can bet the Biden administration is going to be talking about going forward, and the Biden campaign as well.

Lankford’s border and immigration bill failed after former President Donald Trump urged Republicans not to pass it because he plans to continue to use the border as an issue on the campaign trail. Trump and Biden are their parties’ presumptive presidential nominees.
