Fox’s Brit Hume Puts a Damper on Trump’s New Hampshire Primary Win: ‘There’s Weakness There’

Fox News Chief Political Analyst Brit Hume was not impressed with former President Donald Trump’s GOP primary victory in New Hampshire on Tuesday night.

Trump defeated former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who afterward vowed to stay in the presidential race and told supporters, “This race is far from over!” The former president’s margin of victory is about 10 points as of this writing, with votes still being counted. Haley will likely need a strong showing in South Carolina next month to be a viable threat to win the Republican nomination. However, she trails Trump substantially in polling in her home state.

During Fox News’ primary coverage on Tuesday, Martha MacCallum noted that although Trump is not president anymore, he is a de facto incumbent because he is the GOP’s most recent presidential nominee.

“One of the questions that’s on my mind is this issue of sort of, the quasi-incumbency,” she said. “Because the argument is, if you treat him like an incumbent, he should be around 80, 84%, right? He should have almost all the Republican votes, but he’s not. And he’s running against people who are giving him a little bit run for his money. So, Brit, how do you judge? How do you figure out whether or not he has enough growth potential to beat Biden?”

Hume responded:

If you think of him as an incumbent, this showing tonight’s weak, right? I mean, he should be doing better. And it’s also a sign of weakness that the independents and others who voted in this primary were… not welcomed by the Trump campaign and by a lot of his supporters. The idea being, of course, we wouldn’t want them to be the kind of a party and a candidate that draws in people from the other party.

So, there’s a certain insane political logic at work here. But there’s weakness there with Trump. There’s no doubt about it even if wins, you know, easily and going away. Look, he lost in 2020. His candidates lost in 2022. I mean, he has a lot of losses on his book.
