‘I’m Happy For You!’ Lara Trump Confronted Over Trump Legal Fees — Jokes If You Never Hired Lawyer You’re ‘In Great Shape!’

former First Daughter-in-Law and current RNC Chair Lara Trump laughed it off when NBC News correspondent Garrett Haake asked about an arrangement that earmarks donations for a PAC that pays former President Donald Trump’s legal fees.

Haake questioned Lara Trump about a number of issues — including her support for the former president’s election lies — in an interview released on the heels of her predecessor’s ouster from NBC after a Trump-inspired backlash — which did not come up.

At one point, Haake asked what she would say to supporters “who may have never hired a lawyer for themselves before in their life” but are being asked to fund Trump’s defense.

Lara Trump joked that anyone who hasn’t had to hire a lawyer deserves congratulations, and said people could “easily opt out” of the arrangement:

LARA TRUMP: We are a big organization all across this country. We are going to be supporting those races all across the country as well.

GARRETT HAAKE: Does that support for him financially include paying his legal bills directly?

LARA TRUMP: Not from the RNC. It does not support paying his legal bills, no.

GARRETT HAAKE: But the way that the fundraising apparatus is set up at the RNC, money still does go to that PAC, that Save America PAC that has been paying his legal bills before it goes to the RNC.

And I guess my question is, how do you tell people who are sending money, the RNC, people who may have never hired a lawyer for themselves before in their life, that it’s more important to put their money towards paying the legal bills of a billionaire than helping elect Republicans in Pennsylvania or in Michigan.

LARA TRUMP: Well, if you’ve never had to hire a lawyer, you’re doing great stuff! You’re in great shape! I’m very happy for you!

Look, that is the waterfall of the joint fundraising committee you’re referencing. And anyone who does not want to contribute to that very small amount of money is able to opt out of that.

So if you do not want to contribute, you know, $124,600 of your money and you say, I don’t want that specific amount to go to Donald Trump’s legal bills, then you are very, you can very easily opt out.
