Footage of the aftermath of a shooting on a Brooklyn train, Thursday showed a crowd of commuters huddling on the floor in an attempt to hide from the suspect.

A 36-year-old man was reportedly shot with his own gun during rush hour at 4:45 pm, Thursday after he threatened another passenger on the subway at Brooklyn’s Nostrand Avenue Station.

According to ABC 7 New York, the 36-year-old man acted “aggressive and provocative” toward a 32-year-old man after boarding the train, before proceeding to pull out a knife. The man then reportedly put down his knife, pulled out a gun, and approached the other passenger “in a menacing way.”

A physical altercation reportedly ensured, which resulted in the 32-year-old man taking the 36-year-old’s gun and shooting him in the head.

The 36-year-old man is currently in hospital in critical condition. The 32-year-old was taken into custody and questioned by police.

ABC News reporter Joyce Philippe was on the train when the violent incident occurred and recorded footage of the aftermath.

In the footage, commuters could be seen nervously huddling on the floor of the train as shouting can be heard in the distance.

“Where’s NYPD, oh my God!” Philippe could be heard saying, as others screamed. “Close the door, close the door!”

A second video posted by Philippe showed passengers crying as New York City police approached the train with guns drawn in response to the shooting.

According to the New York Times, police have not yet determined whether to charge the 32-year-old man or whether the shooting could be considered self-defense.

At a press conference on Thursday, Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) chairman Janno Lieber said, “The victim here, as the chief said, appears to be the aggressor.”

He added, “But the real victims are the people I saw in those videos, who are having a harrowing time because they’re on a train with somebody with a gun.”

In April 2022, 10 people were shot on a New York City Subway train in Sunset Park, Brooklyn by a Black nationalist, who set off a smoke grenade before opening fire 30 times in the train.

Frank James, 63, was sentenced to 10 concurrent life sentences.
