Following the scoop by CNN’s Jake Tapper that President Joe Biden had not reached out to Democratic governors following the debate, CBS reported that he was scheduled to hold a meeting with them on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Tapper posted a series of tweets about how several Democratic governors had reached out to the White House to hear from the president following Thursday’s presidential debate. However, they had not received a response — until now.

CBS News’ Nancy Cordes and Ed O’Keefe reported that a meeting was now planned for Wednesday, with some planning to attend in person and some virtually. The report noted that Biden’s involvement comes after days of only his aides and advisors reaching out, trying to reassure supporters that Biden is still the candidate after his performance at the debate many Democrats concern.

Several of those Democratic governors are names that are being floated to potentially replace Biden on the ticket, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom. When asked, they have wholeheartedly thrown their support behind Biden as the candidate, dismissing any calls to run in his place. Whitmer reiterated her support for Biden on Monday, and she called specious claims that she said Michigan was unwinnable “full of shit.” Beshear also publicly declared his continued support for Biden, even while admitting he had “a very bad night.” For his part, Newsom, who was in the spin room the night of the debate, said: “I will never turn my back on President Biden. Never turn my back on President Biden, I don’t know a Democrat in my party that would do so.”

A new CNN poll showed several of those governors polling higher than Biden in a race against former President Donald Trump. According to that poll, the best possible contender against Trump was Vice President Kamala Harris.
