Cover Story (view full-size image): The sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (MEAM1), is a major pest infesting vegetables worldwide. This study examined the susceptibilities of different cultivars of yellow squash and zucchini to MEAM1 across three growing seasons in the southeastern U.S. Weekly sampling of whitefly adults, nymphs, and eggs showed that the yellow squash cultivars ‘Early Summer’ and ‘Amberpic 8455’ had the highest whitefly counts, while ‘Lioness’ and ‘Gourmet Gold Hybrid’ had the lowest counts. For zucchini, ‘Black Beauty’ had the highest whitefly counts, while ‘Green Eclipse’ had the lowest counts. The highest yields recorded for the yellow squash cultivars were ‘Gourmet Gold Hybrid’, ‘Lioness’, and ‘Fortune’, and ‘Golden Glory’ for zucchini cultivars. This information will facilitate selection by farmers of pest-resilient and high-yielding cultivars, especially in crop systems plagued by climate change. View this paper
