Cover Story (view full-size image): During the pandemic, container vessels queued in open waters, waiting to be handled at container terminals. This raised the question of how such challenging operational situations could be mitigated in the future. Digital Twins seem to be a promising approach since they have already been used in production and logistics to increase flexibility in operations and to support operational decision-making based on real-time information. To investigate this idea, a Delphi study was conducted with 17 experts. The results indicate that they see great potential in analyzing past working shift data to identify the reasons for poor terminal performance.
