You often listen to the public address announcer in stadiums and read in many signs the phrase "pay attention to the field of play". In this case, it seems that didn't 'matter.

It all happened during the Sunday Night Baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox. In the bottom of the third inning, Bostons Tanner Houck faced catcher Miguel Amaya and quickly got ahead in the count 0-2.

Houck decided to throw a splitter that at 89 miles per hour dropped in the zone, making the Cubs batter swing and miss to get the strikeout, but because of that Amaya lost the grip on the bat and it when flying over the protecting net and into the stands.

On his way to the dugout, Amaya looked into the landing spot of his bat where many fans gathered around.

The bat nearly hit a stadium employee, but it hit a fan

In the replay shown on the ESPN broadcast, it appears the flying bat hits a person in the stands. According to Boston Herald reporter Mac Cerullo, Amayas bat nearly hit a pizza vendor; however, a fan was struck by it.

Cerullo reported that the fan quickly received medical attention from Fenway Parks event medics. "The fan was just wheeled away by Fenway Park's medical staff," the reporter shared on the X social media platform.

There had not been any reports of the status of the fan, but it is believed that the person did not suffer any major injuries. This still is a reminder that in baseball people in the stands must always pay attention to the field of play, but perhaps is also one for Major League Baseball for them to consider raising the netting in stadiums to prevent any incidents like this one.
