Jean Dolores Bertha Schmidt, commonly known as "Sister Jean", turned 104 years old a week ago.
In honor of her birthday, the Chicago Cubs invited her to historic Wrigley Field to throw out the first pitch ahead of their game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.
The Cubs fell 6-2 to the Brewers, but it was a special moment for the woman who has earned a spot in Chicago sports lore.
Sister Jean's rise to fame
Sister Jean rose to prominence on the national scene during the 2018 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. She attended the Loyola Ramblers' first round upset victory over the Miami Hurricanes and became an internet sensation as the camera continually panned to the 99-year-old.
She was present during the Ramblers' improbable run to the Final Four, although the team ended up falling to Michigan before being able to reach the National Championship.
Sister Jean was at the 2021 and 2022 editions of the tournament as well and surprised the national audience with her good health at such an advanced age.
She began working at Loyola University Chicago in 1991 and has served as the men's basketball team's chaplain since 1994.
