- Movies. Harvey Weinstein will spend the rest of his life behind bars: sentenced in LA to 16 additional years
On Friday, June 7, former U.S. film producer Harvey Weinstein asked that his rape and sexual assault conviction be overturned, while also asking for a new trial.
This is what he requested before an appeals court in California, the state that sentenced him to 16 years in prison for the aforementioned crimes, as reported by NBC.
As he explained, this request is based on what happened last April, when the New York Court of Appeals overturned his conviction of 23 years in prison for errors during the judicial process, which took place in 2020. In fact, it is in the wake of this court proceeding that the #MeToo movement began.
Weinstein hopes that the move will be repeated and he can also get rid of this conviction, for which he is serving 16 years in prison for rape and sexual assault.
In the case of the New York courts' ruling, it was based on the fact that the judge improperly called several women to testify as witnesses, since they considered themselves victims of the producer, although the accusations they uttered were not part of the facts that were being judged on that occasion.
Engelmayer: Harvey Weinstein was judged by a system dedicated to 'get him' at all costs
At 72 years old, Harvey Weinstein is convinced that he can repeat things by filing his appeal in the Second District Court of Appeal, in the Californian city of Los Angeles, as reported by NBC.
The American network has also been able to speak with Juda Engelmayer, Weinsten's publicist, who considers that the trial had several irregularities: "Harvey Weinstein was judged by a system dedicated to 'get him' at all costs," he said.
"This appeal demonstrates nearly a dozen areas of blatant legal errors that violated his right to a fair trial."
