Rory McllRoy and Erica Stoll are no more, with the couple headed for divorce. Golf's number two rated superstar will appear at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky for the PGA Championship this weekend, and he will do so without his wedding ring.

A statement confirmed this week, "Rory McIlroy's communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed," with the pair claiming they remain cordial and respectful through the separation process.

The couple met in 2014 and got married three years later. They also share a daughter in Poppy Kennedy McIlroy.

Interestingly, though, Mcllroy has now employed the divorce lawyer used by Tiger Woods. Thomas Sasser, a renowned attorney in the United States as far as high-profile divorce cases go, oversaw Woods' divorce from Elin Nordegren back in 2010.

Sasser has also overseen a divorce involving Joe Jonas among others. The move to use Woods' lawyer has extra intrigue because of the disagreements between Woods and Mcllroy, with the two at odds over how to progress golf, something that has dominated headlines of late.

The details behind the divorce

Files submitted to Palm Beach County State Court in Florida show claims that the marriage is "irretrievably broken". They also show a desire on both parts to have shared custody of the child involved, who is three years of age.

Meanwhile, Mcllroy must continue with his busy golf schedule, and it has already been noticed that he has taken off his wedding ring, appearing during a practice round on this week.
