Danilo has revealed how his compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo remarkably predicted he would break the all-time international goal-scoring record against the Republic of Ireland.

Ronaldo's chances of doing so in their encounter last year were slim, with the Manchester United ace requiring a brace in a matter of minutes.

At the time, Portugal were losing the match 2-1 and their chances of turning the tide around looked slim — but Ronaldo's confidence was not dented.

In an interview with Ouest France, Danilo revealed that Ronaldo remarkably predicted that his side would turn the game around.

He said: "Two minutes from the end, he came for a drink by the bench and said to us: “Don’t worry. We will win.

"I heard what he said and looked at the stadium screen, it was the 88th minute.

"I thought: ‘What?’ Well, I didn’t say anything, but… in the end, we won 2-1. He scored two goals, in the 89th and 96th minutes…”

Those goals took Ronaldo's international tally to 111, breaking the previous record of 109 international goals scored by Iran's Ali Daei.
