British Airways has cancelled further flights to and from China amid the coronavirus outbreak - which has resulted in more than 2,000 deaths.

The airline had previously cancelled flights to mainland China from last month up until April 1, but has now decided to suspend direct flights up until April 17.

Customers will be contacted to discuss other travel arrangements, including booking onto other carriers or providing full refunds.

However, British Airways will continue to fly to Hong Kong.

A statement from BA said: "In line with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s continued advice against all but essential travel to mainland China, we are cancelling flights to and from Beijing and Shanghai until April 17 2020.

“We continue to fly to and from Hong Kong.

“We will be contacting customers on cancelled flights so we can discuss their travel options, including rebooking onto other carriers where possible, full refunds or booking with BA for a later date of travel. Customers can also find the latest information and options on BA.com.

“Safety is at the heart of everything we do and we will keep the situation under review.”

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to Hubei Province due to the ongoing novel coronavirus outbreak.

And advise against 'all but essential travel' to the rest of mainland China (not including Hong Kong and Macao).

A number of other airlines have cancelled flights due to the outbreak, including Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong's flag carrier airline.

They were forced to cancel two in every five flights for February and March.

The airline issued a profit warning and asked its 27,000 employees to take unpaid leave to help it stay afloat.

On Friday, the repatriation flight organised by the government will bring back British nationals on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship docked in Japan.

Around 70 Brits from the ship flying from Tokyo will then be quarantined at Arrowe Park, Wirral, once they land in the UK.
