It seemed like an ITV match made in heaven - bring Coronation Street and This Morning together with cameo appearances by Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield.

But the reality of Friday night's scene left some fans disappointed - with some suggesting it was no better than a Comic Relief parody sketch.

Others, however, thought it was hilarious, the Mirror reports .

Coronation Street fans had big expectations for Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield's cameo.

But many viewers felt let down after watching their 'wooden' acting skills.

Rosie Webster, Craig Tinker and Gemma Winter were interviewed by the presenters, who were playing themselves, after their successful drugs bust.

But it appeared the nervy This Morning hosts struggled without a teleprompter and Holly even appeared to corpse and start laughing at one gag.

Speaking about the scenes behind-the-scenes, actress Helen Flanagan admitted the presenters were "out of their comfort zone".

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield made a hilarious cameo on Corrie

Following the episode's broadcast, Holly tweeted a video showing behind-the-scenes footage of the cameo being filmed.

Alongside the video Willoughby wrote: "Thank you for having us."

Things started awkwardly on-screen when the presenters joked about not understanding Professor Brian Cox's accent.

The Weatherfield gang then turned up in the studio and Craig was transfixed by Holly.

After a painfully long handshake, Phil said: "They all do that."

Gemma, who did her own make-up, then confessed she had a crush on Phil.

When Gemma said she thought Phil would be "bigger", Holly struggled to get her words out.

Seemingly trying not to giggle, Holly said: "They always say that too."

Eventually Rosie walked in looking a million dollars after having an "eyelash emergency".

Turning to Holly, she said: "Can I just say I know you’re like a style icon for mums and that but I’d totally wear most of your clothes."

Craig wanted to go to the toilet just before the show went on air but presenters both shouted: "No."

Lots of This Morning viewers found the scenes too cringeworthy and ego boosting.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer said: "Don't get me wrong, I love #Corrie. But this "This Morning" skit really feels like the sort of thing you'd find on a Comic Relief or Children in Need parody sketch. Not a fan."

Another added: "Oh no-what has actually happened to Coronation Street tonight?! @itvcorrie on @thismorning?! Really dislike!!! It’s getting stupid!!"

A third agreed: "God what next... Characters just breaking the fourth wall? Cringe... Major cringe"

However, there were some viewers who enjoyed the cameo.

Gemma went a bit over the top with her make-up

One fan said: "Omg that is so beyond insane that lot on the #ThisMorning sofa with @Schofe & Holly"

Another agreed: "Gemma Rosie and Craig on Thus Morning with Holly and Phil has to be the best thing on #Corrie ever ever ever Amen"

A third said: "Corrie on This Morning. Laughing my head off already! Brilliant!"
