An old cricket club bowling green could become the site of 20 new houses on East Road in Longsigh.

Members of Longsight Cricket Club voted last year to sell its bowling green in the wake of declining numbers of players, with proceeds from the sale being reinvested into the club. It was snapped up by developers Views.

Views hopes to build three three-bedroom houses and 16 four-bedroom houses on the site, with Patrick Sheridan, its senior development manager saying the new plans 'will provide much needed family homes for Longsight’. Each home will have a back garden, a driveway with one parking space and secure cycle parking, according to planning documents.

To mitigate the loss of the bowling green, Views claims it’s working with the Burnage Village bowling green two miles away to contribute to its upkeep as Longsight players move on.

“Before we can submit any planning application, we need to formalise arrangements with Burnage Village bowling green to help the club there thrive and allow former players from Longsight to continue to enjoy their sport,” added Mr Sheridan.

The current cricket clubhouse and social club, which will remain open, was built in 2012 in a redevelopment of the site – but Longsight Cricket Club itself dates back to 1848.

There is an ongoing public consultation on the Longsight Cricket Club redevelopment, which is open until Monday, July 15. You can have your say online here.
