Instagram allows users to create group video calls with up to eight people on the social platform. This article explains how to use it in the Instagram mobile app.

Instagram Feature 2
The following steps walk you through the process of starting a video call with someone and then adding other people to the call.

  1. Launch Instagram and tap the paper airplane icon in the top-right corner to go to the Direct screen.
  2. Tap on an existing chat or start a new conversation.
  3. Tap the camera icon in the top-right corner to start a video call. The person or group you call will receive a notification that you're calling them.
  4. To add people to the video call, tap the Add people icon and then tap Invite next to People. The people you've added will receive a notification that you're calling them.

Keep in mind that anyone you've accepted a message from, except for verified accounts, can video call with you. To prevent someone from video calling with you, you can block them.

Here are some additional Instagram video call tips:

  • When on your video call, you can switch between the front and back-facing camera on your device by tapping the two arrows that form a circle.
  • To make the call appear in a small frame on your device so you can continue browsing Instagram, tap the down-pointing chevron.
  • To share a link to your call, tap the Add People icon, then tap Invite and tap Share link.
  • Lastly, to end your video call, tap the downward-facing telephone icon.

Sometimes, for whatever reason, you might not want someone – or indeed anyone – to know when you were last active on Instagram. Fortunately, you can easily hide your activity status in the app. Check out our dedicated how-to article to learn how it's done.
