Update to iOS 17.5.1 Now to Fix This Concerning Photos Bug

iPhone users should upgrade to iOS 17.5.1 immediately to avoid a potentially embarrassing bug that causes old photos that have been deleted – in some cases years ago – to reappear in the device's photo library.

iOS 17
Prior to the release of iOS 17.5.1 late Monday, several iPhone and iPad users reported seeing their old, deleted photos resurface after installing Apple's iOS 17.5 update. Images deleted long ago were appearing in the Photos app as though they had been taken recently, leading to confusion and worry over what was going on.

For example, after updating their iPhone to iOS 17.5, one user said they were shocked to find old NSFW photos they had captured with their partner years ago, when they were living apart due to Covid, suddenly showing up in their library marked as recently uploaded to iCloud. This was despite claiming that they had deleted the images back in 2021.

Other users chimed in with similar stories. "Same here," said one Redditor. "I have four pics from 2010 that keep reappearing as the latest pics uploaded to iCloud. I have deleted them repeatedly."

At the time, it was not clear what was happening, but Apple's release notes for its latest iOS 17.5.1 update indicate that it fixes "a rare issue where photos that experienced database corruption could reappear in the Photos library even if they were deleted."

To make sure you don't fall victim to the bug, update your devices now: Open Settings and navigate to General ➝ Software Update, where you'll see an option to download and install the software.
