Upcoming M3 MacBook Pro Software Update Unlocks This Major New Feature

Apple will add multi-display support to 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro models via a software update in the near future, the company has confirmed.

Apple's new M3 MacBook Air models include support for up to two 5K external displays when the laptop's lid is closed, a feature that is not currently available on the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the same M3 chip.

The 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro supports one external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz when the lid is open, but two displays are not currently supported in any configuration.

The limitation has been a sticking point for Apple users, and one made all the more nonsensical with Apple's debut of the latest MacBook Air, given that both models use identical M3 chips.

When Apple's promised update drops, the M3 MacBooks will also be able to power two 5K external displays with a resolution of up to 60Hz while the lid is closed. That is equivalent to the Studio Display, so users can expect to be able to run two of Apple's 5K displays in clamshell mode.

The higher-end M3 Pro and M3 Max MacBook Pro models are already able to drive multiple displays, so this change only applies to the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the base M3 chip.

It's unclear when the update for the M3 MacBook Pro will be released, but Apple is likely to act as soon as this month in order to achieve feature parity with the new MacBook Air models, which will launch on Friday, March 8.
