That was what I suspected.

Incidentally, for anyone with legacy FW devices, you can get them to work in current Macs. Just connect an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter to your Mac’s Thunderbolt 4 port and an Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire into the adapter. Hey presto – a working FireWire port.

I have an old Edirol (Roland) FW external audio interface and a FW film scanner both still working happily on my Apple Silicon MacBook Air – now through my OWC dock’s FW port but previously using the solution above.
