Something is going on here? You know what I'm starting to think? A whole lot of people upgraded to M1 both Air and Pro during the pandemic and they have absolutely no need for an upgrade. The M1 Pro and Max MacBook Pro's were the mop up crew that finished things off. Then the threat of recession scared people into saving whatever disposable income they had and avoid any non-essential upgrades.

I am concerned if there is gonna be much if any demand for the M3.

On the contrary, I think a sizable segment are skipping M2 and holding out for the M3 for the very reasons you've laid out.

Apple didn't do themselves any favors with the high pricing. Personally, during the M2 phase I've spec'ed out and dumped at least three orders on different systems based on not being able to justify the final price after getting dinged $200/$400 per BTO upgrades.

If you don’t need the Pro, I’d say, go with the Air. You’re not going to notice any difference unless you’re using some capability that the Pro offers. If you’re not rendering 4K videos, you’re not going to notice all the graphics power because it’s not doing anything with most tasks.

It’s kind of like having a Lamborghini but never driving over 25 mph. Sure there’s a cool factor so maybe that’s your motive and that’s fine but with normal use you won’t tell the difference. If you’re carrying it with you, you will notice the weight difference of the Air. Also, there’s rumors of a larger MacBook Air so that will be interesting.
I wish I even had a business reason for a new Air ?

The 15” is extremely interesting, but I still have a Dell laptop on windows 10 that runs really well, so no argument for a new computer other than “I wanna”. Ha

Why the heck would anyone need to upgrade from an M1 mac? I'm willing to bet that a very large percentage (probably 30-40%) of all Mac users are still on Intel hardware. Stuff from 2017 supports Ventura and for most general computing tasks, even older Apple hardware isn't challenged at all.

I think people that were interested in Apple silicon for its own merits probably upgraded during the initial M1 products. I think the rest of the Mac-using population is going to gradually shift over as Apple fades out support for new OS versions and as some of the missing holes (27" iMac) get filled in.

I don't think anyone with an M1 Mac of any variety should seriously be considering upgrades to M2 or M3 hardware. The Apple hardware upgrades are so minor and incremental that it will be many generations before its actually worth upgrading.

To me it looks like many people are not sure about the apple silicon roadmap and when to buy a new one? In the beginning it sounded like they would immediately be expanded with more cores and a flood of new generations at short intervals. After some time it becomes clear that progress is slower and only custom software can make full use of apple silicon plus the eGPU question is far from being solved. Add extreme prices for bigger storage and RAM that won't be upgradeable later on and it is no surprise people possibly facing a recession are hesitant to buy.
It's good to see prices come down a bit I have played with the idea to get a more budget friendly M1 MBP myself finally needing to switch from intel to Apple silicon. But for now I am waiting and hoping for the M3.
