Apple Finally Planning to Slash iPad Pro Weight in 2024

Apple is reportedly planning to significantly reduce the iPad Pro's weight in 2024 as part of a major update, according to recent reports.

According to ET News, Apple is focused on making 2024's 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models lighter. Reducing the weight of the display is said to be key to this, with Apple switching to a dry etching process partly to lose weight. Since the new displays are much thinner, Apple apparently had to develop a special coating to increase their durability.

The 11-inch and 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ models in 2024 are widely rumored to be getting an OLED display for the first time to deliver "unrivaled image quality," so the fundamental changes to the display components come alongside this update to panel technology that will bring pixel-accurate true blacks to the iPad, just like the iPhone and Apple Watch.

Wi-Fi-only models of the current 11-inch and 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ weigh 466 grams (1.03 pounds) and 682 grams (1.5 pounds) respectively, and it is as yet unclear how far Apple will be able to reduce weight, especially since the rumored redesign for the ‌iPad Pro‌ this year could add a glass back for wireless charging – which is likely to be heavier than the current aluminum back.

Nevertheless, reducing the ‌iPad Pro‌'s weight as part of what could be a thinner design could address criticism from some users and make the device more mobile. The combination of the 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ and the Magic Keyboard has been rebuked for weighing even more than the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Apple is currently believed to be making final prototypes of these upcoming ‌iPad‌ models with OLED displays. The prototypes are reportedly being produced with Korean display partners Samsung and LG Display to allow Apple to undertake a series of tests ahead of the scheduled 2024 timeframe for launch.
