Canadian residents who purchase third-party protection plans for an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch can now access service and support directly from Apple, with equivalent coverage as AppleCare+ customers, according to an internal document published by Apple today and obtained by MacRumors.

If a customer purchases a protection plan for her ‌iPhone‌ from a carrier like Bell or Rogers, for example, she can now book an appointment with an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider in Canada and receive the same services as ‌AppleCare‌+, including up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage.

Apple advises technicians to service customers with an eligible third-party protection plan "in the same manner you do today for ‌AppleCare‌+" and to "address their issue in the same great way you take care of all our customers."

Theft, loss, and any accidental damage incidents after the first two will remain handled by carriers and their insurance providers, wrote Apple.

A few U.S. carriers already offer this, including T-Mobile.

‌AppleCare‌ services for third-party protection plans in Canada are supported by Brightstar.

To schedule an appointment with an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider in Canada, head to the Get Support page on Apple's website.

One big difference. AppleCare doesn't cover if your device is lost or stolen. Most carrier offered plans cover this. On the flip side most carrier offered plans don't cover repair. You just pay the deductible ($280 in my case) and they send a refurbished phone. In the case of my screen replacement AppleCare cost me $29 so I saved about $250 not using my insurance.

I remember when the whole phone financing thing started and my carrier would require loss or theft coverage. They didn't want someone losing their phone, not having the upfront cash to replace it, then simply stop paying.

Edit: I'm talking about the USA. I had to mention this because the article talks about Canada. I suspect it's the same there but I don't have any way to confirm this.
But Apple offer AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss already.

But sending refurbished phone sounds good to me!
