safaripreviewiconApple today released another update for Safari Technology Preview, the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March of 2016. Apple designed the Safari Technology Preview to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

Safari Technology Preview release 12 includes bug fixes and updates for JavaScript, Web APIs, Web Inspector, MathML, CSS, rendering, and accessibility. Several security fixes are also included.

As of release 8, Safari Technology Preview has supported Apple Pay in the web browser, a feature set to launch as part of macOS Sierra.

The Safari Technology Preview update is available through the Software Update mechanism in the Mac App Store to anyone who has downloaded the browser. Versions are available for developers running both macOS Sierra and OS X El Capitan. Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website.

Apple’s goal with Safari Technology Preview is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. Safari Technology Preview can be run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

Any particular reasons?
Reasons for running it? It has received more recent love and attention from the developers than the El Cap version. Reasons for preferring it? I had some, at some point, but sadly I've forgotten most of them. It feels a bit more stable. And its refusal to run plugins automatically means I don't need ClickToPlugin any more.

Anybody know how much the Technical preview is ahead of the Sierra version of Safari? What features are included in the Technical preview that didn't make it to Sierra.
I expect their goal is to have them be the same, but the standalone Technology Preview can be a little more fleet-footed than the bundled version. I wish there was a detailed comparison change list between the two version (I'm one of those weirdos that likes release notes).

Yes, I am using it on the PB of Sierra. Seems to run just fine as I've not had any issues to report yet.

I've been using this on El Cap for quite some time as my primary browser. I like it more than the normal El Cap version of Safari.

It doesn't appear to be as simple as that, although there's a lot of overlap currently. TP will most likely pick up any features the Sierra Version has and overtake it before too long, as Sierra Safari/Safari 10 might be in a feature freeze until Sierra is released. Most notably (according to caniuse atleast, I haven't checked this myself) is that Safari 10 has Shadow DOM but TP doesn't seem to..

For a quick overview see caniuse.com, here http://caniuse.com/#compare=safari+9.1,safari+10,safari+TP for a nice visual comparison, although this isn't necessarily extensive. For JS comparison load up kangax, at kangax.github.io and check out ECMAScript 6 compat tables (and 2016+ and next).
