Memorial Day 2019: Parades, observances in Rockland, Westchester, Putnam

Here's a list of Memorial Day parades and ceremonies throughout Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties. If there is a parade or remembrance that we have missed, please let us know. Email Heather Clark, hclark@poughkeepsiejournal.com.

May 24

New City: Parade starts at 11 a.m. at the Street Community Center, 31 Zukor Road, New City. Refreshments to follow.

May 26

Eastchester: Ceremony at Eastchester High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. 

Hastings-on-Hudson: Parade starts at 2 p.m. at Main Street and Warburton Avenue.

MontebelloThe village of Montebello will hosts its remembrance at 9 a.m. on the front lawn of Village Hall, 1 Montebello Road, Suffern.

Tappan: The Raymond W. DeMeola VFW Post 1615 of Blauvelt will be hosting its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Walkway of Heroes, Lester Drive and Independence Avenue. All are invited to attend.

May 27

Ardsley: Sponsored by American Legion Post #458, the ceremony and parade will take place at Pascone Park. Parade steps off sharply at 10 a.m. from Park Avenue heading east on Ashford Avenue to Pascone Park. In case of inclement weather, the cermony will be held at Ardsley Firehouse at 10 a.m.

Brewster: VFW Post 672 hosts parade at 11 a.m. from Brewster Fire House to the monument at Veterans Park (formerly Electrozone Field), where a ceremony will be held. Light lunch to follow at post home on Peaceable Hill Road.

Croton-on-Hudson: The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at Veterans Corner (Old Post Road South, Cleveland Drive and Radnor Avenue). In case of rain, the ceremony will take place in the gym of Hooly Name of Mary Church. 

Elmsford:Begins at 10:30 a.m. at Legion Park on East Main Street then continues west on Main Street to South Stone Avenue to Village Hall. There will be a service next to Village Hall under a tent, rain or shine, after the parade. If the parade gets rained out, the service will continue at 11 a.m. After the service, the Elmsford Reformed Church and Cemetery will be open for tours. Joseph Giannini, who served in the U.S. Army, is the Grand Marshal.

Haverstraw: Ceremonies at 9 a.m. at Haverstraw Town Hall, One Rosman Road; 9:30 a.m. at Calico Hill Veteran's Memorial, Railroad Avenue, Garnerville; 10 a.m. at Civil War Monument, Hudson Avenue, Haverstraw; 10:30 a.m. at World War II Monument, Clove Avenue, Haverstraw; 11 a.m. at World War I Monument, Mount Repose Cemetery; 11:30 a.m. watch fire ceremony at Bowline Point Park.

Hillburn: Parade starts at 9 a.m at the Suffern Central School District Administration building and will proceed to the World War I monument at the corner of Lake Avenue and Fourth Street for the ceremony.

Mount Vernon: From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Paul’s Church, 897 South Columbus Ave., Mount Vernon. Ceremony begins at 11 a.m. with a wreath laying ceremony afterward, followed by walking tours of the historic cemetery with particular emphasis on WWII. There will be a presentation at 2:30 p.m. on WWII.

New Castle: The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Victory Corners monument on the corner of King Street and Bedford Road. The parade will assemble at Ridgewood Terrace at 10:40 a.m. At 11 a.m., the parade will step off from Ridgewood Terrace onto Bedford Road.

CLINTONS, CUOMO:Andrew Cuomo, Clintons march in 2019 New Castle Memorial Day parade

New Rochelle: Sponsored by the American Legion Post 8 and the New Rochelle Veterans Advisory Committee, a ceremony will take place at the Memorial Plaza at 11 a.m. Followed by a water service at Hudson Park at 12:30 p.m. 

Nyack: Parade kicks off at 11 a.m. on Artropee Way and ends at Memorial Park where a ceremony will be held.

Ossining: The Town and Village of Ossining will be holding a Memorial Day Service at Nelson Park with speaker Captain Katthryn M. Moryl. 

Pearl River: The John H. Secor American Legion Post 329 of Pearl River will host the parade, beginning at 10:15 a.m. on North Middletwon Road, across from Retro Fitness. The parade route then heads south to East Central Avenue and then down East Central Avenue to Braunsdorf Park. Guest speaker is Pearl River resident Paul Crowe, a U.S. Army Combat Veteran who served in Vietnam.

Peekskill: Services at 10 a.m. at Monument Park, intersection of North Division Street and Highland Avenue.

Rye: Parade will honor the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice at the ceremony following. 8:30 a.m. Rye Historical Society, 1 Purchase St., Rye.

Scarsdale: Starting at 9:15 a.m., there will be a brief ceremony before the parade kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Visit the Scarsdale American Legion Post 52 Memorial Garden afterward (located in front of the Scarsdale Pool Complex) where a number of monuments commemorate those who’ve fallen.

Sloatsburg: At 10 a.m. there will be a ceremony at Veterans' Park at the municipal building until 10:25 a.m. A parade will follow, lead by the Suffern High School band, down Route 17. There will be a gun salute at the library's WWI memorial. Then the pardae continues down Eagle Valley Road to the cemetery, where a gun salute will be held and "Taps" will be played. From there, there will be a gathering at the community fields where refreshments will be served. 

Spring Valley: At 1 p.m. in Memorial Park, the Spring Valley American Legion Mascarella Post #199 and the Village of Spring Valley will be hosting their annual Memorial Day observance. All residents of the village are invited to honor those that have served our country. There will be representatives of the U.S. Armed Forces in attendance, as well as the customary Posting and Retirement of the Military Colors. Music will be provided by the East Ramapo Marching Band and light refreshments will be served.

St. Paul’s Monument: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. A ceremony in the church at 11 a.m. is followed by laying wreaths at solders' graves. There will also be a walking tour of the historic cemetery, exploring the lives and service of veterans buried at St. Paul's, with an emphasis on World War II. A special 2:30 p.m. presentation examines World War II and American movies. St. Paul's Church National Historic Site, 897 South Columbus Ave., Mount Vernon.

Stony Point: The cemetery service will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Mount Rest Cemetery located on West Main Street. The parade lineup will then begin on the corner of Jay Street and TenEyck Street at 9 a.m. The marching will kick off at 9:30 a.m., which includes a service at the Spring Memorial shortly after kick off and commences with a final memorial service at Town Hall around 10:30 a.m.

Stony Point Battlefield: 2:30-3 p.m. Participate in a Memorial Day commemoration for fallen soldiers from all wars with a presentation of an 18th century military ceremony to honor the dead. Followed immediately by a 3 p.m. artillery demonstration. Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site, 44 Battlefield Road, Stony Point. 

Suffern: Beginning at 11 a.m., the parade lines up at the corners of Lafayette and Orange avenues and proceeds up Lafayette Avenue to a soldiers monument where a ceremony will be held. All veterans, service members, girl scouts and boy scouts are invited to march.

Valhalla: Parade at 9:30 a.m. on Westlake Drive, behind the Valhalla Methodist Church, proceeds south on Columbus Avenue. A ceremony at 10 a.m. at the gazebo and monuments follows the parade. Hot dogs, ice cream and beverages will be served after the ceremony, about 11:30 a.m. at the American Legion Post 1038.

Tarrytown: Parade at 9 a.m. on Main Street in Tarrytown, proceeds up Main to Broadway and into Sleepy Hollow, then to Patriots Park for a service at the memorial.

White Plains: Parade starts at 10 a.m. on Church Street, continues onto Main Street, and proceeds to the Rural Cemetary where a ceremony will be held.

Yorktown Heights:A service at 11 a.m. at the memorials at Town Hall. Parade, speeches and ceremony follow at 11:15 a.m. at John “Jack” DeVito Gazebo, Yorktown Community and Cultural Center.

May 29

Rockland County Watchfires

Watchfires for the troops who didn’t return from war will be lit at midnight May 29 at the end of the Piermont Pier and burn for 24 hours at four locations: Bowline Point Park in Haverstraw, Eugene Levy Memorial Park on Route 45 in Pomona, the top of Clausland Mountain in Orangeburg, and the east end of the Piermont Pier.

May 30

Mamaroneck: Parade steps off at 7 p.m. at Mamaroneck Avenue School and continues down the avenue into the village, making a right on Prospect to American Legion Post 90. A ceremony of remembrance will follow. 914-341-1034 or ALPost90@aol.com.

Mount Kisco: The American Legion Post 136 of Mount Kisco will hold its annual Memorial Day Parade, May 30 at 6:30 p.m., starting at the corner of Smith Avenue and Main Street proceeding down Main Street to the War Memorial next to Village Hall where a ceremony will take place. American Legion will serve refreshments after the service. In case of rain, ceremony will be held inside the American Legion Building, 1 Legion Way at 6:30 p.m.

Yonkers: Parade kicks off at 6 p.m. at McLean Avenue, proceeds to Stillwell Park and ends at Bajart Post No. 1122 (840 McLean Ave.), for a ceremony.
