Closures in place as crews make second attempt at rehabilitating Rickenbacker Causeway flyover bridge

MIAMI – A second attempt at rehabilitating the Rickenbacker Causeway flyover bridge began Monday after a first attempt in April left drivers caught in traffic for more than four hours.

Right now, the ramp from the westbound Rickenbacker Causeway to southbound US-1 is closed.

The closure will last until July 20 at 6 a.m.

“During this closure, the ramp from westbound Rickenbacker Causeway to northbound SR 9A/I-95 will remain open,” the Florida Department of Transportation said in a news release.

From 10 p.m. on July 21 to 6 a.m. on Aug. 3, the ramp from westbound Rickenbacker Causeway to northbound SR 9A/I-95 will be closed.

“During this closure, the ramp from westbound Rickenbacker Causeway to southbound SR 5/US 1 will remain open,” the news release stated.

The project involves replacing pavement markings and markers on roads that are over 50 years old.

“These particular bridges are over 50 years old. If you drive the area, you will notice that it’s not a smooth ride and there’s two spans per bridge that are gonna be somewhat reconstructed,” said Mario L. Cabrera, P.E., District 6 Construction Engineer.
