Chicago Fire visit Inter Miami in season opener

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Inter Miami takes on the Chicago Fire at home Saturday for the season opener, and club co-owners Jorge Mas and David Beckham held a press conference Friday to express their hope and optimism for the new season.

Mas told reporters the club has “spared no resource – monetary or otherwise” – to make sure their staff and players have every resource to succeed this season.

Miami was 12-17-5 overall in the 2021 season while going 7-8-2 at home. Miami scored 36 goals a season ago while allowing opponents to score 53.

The Fire went 9-18-7 overall last season while going 2-13-2 on the road. The Fire scored 36 goals last season while allowing opponents to score 54.

Beckham told reporters Friday that the last couple of seasons have taught him to have “a little more patience,” and that while Inter Miami is still a newer MLS team, they still have high expectations.

Mas also touched on the latest developments for the co-owners’ plan to build the Miami Freedom Park complex and soccer stadium at the Melreese golf course, just east of Miami International Airport, saying after years of tough negotiations, commissioners are finally expected to vote on the deal March 9.

It will take four of the five Miami commissioners to approve the Freedom Park deal.
