FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Robert and Rene Wood found their home riddled with bullets after their Fort Lauderdale apartment was hit in a hail of gunfire on Sunday.
The shooting occurred near Northwest 15th Avenue and 22nd Street, close to the busy Mills Pond Park, leaving even neighbors like Robert Wood, a Vietnam veteran, shaken.
“They were shooting at a car right in front of here, but I was sitting right there in the recliner,” said Robert Wood.
Sgt. Patrick O’Brien, a spokesman for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, told Local 10 News that “three adult males were shot in their extremities, arms and legs, but nothing life-threatening.” They were transported to Broward Health Medical Center and are expected to survive.
A neighbor also told Local 10 News off-camera that their nephew, who they claim was one of the three people wounded in the shooting, needed surgery after sustaining a gunshot wound.
The shooting left many bullet holes in a white BMW, shattered three windows, and prompted at least 22 crime scene markers. It also frightened residents who said they couldn’t remember if they had ever heard shots fired in their street before.
Robert Wood shared how his PTSD kicked in as the chaos ensued.
Rene Wood also reflected on the close call, noting that if the bullet trajectory had been slightly different, her husband could have been hit.
“He got down on the ground and I ran in to check on him,” she said. “If the bullet had been a little bit lower, it would’ve got Bob,” she said.
According to O’Brien, police officers detained two suspects after a pursuit ended in Lauderhill and found three guns in their car. Local 10 News has a pending request for the identities of the three injured and the two detained.
Fort Lauderdale police also revealed that the two detained men are facing charges unrelated to the shooting; however, this detail may change as the investigation progresses.
Authorities confirmed that there are no more suspects at large.
