Fort Lauderdale officials say they’re ready for spring break

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale’s mayor and police chief held a news conference Friday as they prepare for an influx of spring breakers.

Mayor Dean Trantalis and Chief Bill Schultz said the city is ready if Miami Beach’s efforts to discourage spring break are successful and swells of visitors head to Broward instead.

“We don’t know what the future will bring but we are prepared for it,” Trantalis said. We embrace it and we’re looking forward to allowing everyone regardless of where they come from, that they’re going to have a great experience here.”

The pair said everyone is welcome if they act responsibly.

“We need to look out for each other. If you see something suspicious, if you see someone acting out dangerously, please let us know,” Schultz said. “Call 911 and let us handle the situation.”

In addition to enforcing existing laws, there are also special rules on the beach: no coolers, no canopies or tents, no amplified beach or amplified music or live music on the beach and, for the first time, first responders say they’re partnering with hoteliers, including providing Narcan in case there are any narcotics emergencies.
