For many of us who are going on short trips this summer, it's just not worth it to fork out for a large suitcase to be placed in the hold onboard your flight.

And this is where it's really useful to be crafty with how you pack things, whether that's in a small carry-on suitcase, backpack or duffle bag that goes on the plane with you.

Packing cubes have been hugely popular with holidaymakers on social media recently, as they can be a great way to organise your suitcase and maximise the space. However, you don't need to rely on these, as one simple packing method works just as well - and it can help you fit 'months' of clothes.

The nifty trick was shared on TikTok by @joanna.pirog, who abandoned her packing cubes when preparing for a trip in favour of a simpler and cheaper method. Showing an empty suitcase and all of her planned holiday clothes, she rolled up each piece tight before slotting them carefully into the case.

Multiple dresses, shirts, tops, skirts and shorts all fitted into the case with ease, and even when it looked like there was no room left, Joanna was able to fit in even more by squeezing them into the tiny gaps. She claimed that doing it this way allowed her to pack 'three months' worth of clothes in just one small case.

Explaining further in the caption, she said: "Packing cubes don't save space, roll your clothes and you'll fit so much more!"

In the video's comments, people were in firm agreement that packing cubes often aren't very effective, unless you've got a huge suitcase to work with.

"I'm with you on the packing cubes. I just find they make it so much worse," someone said. Another commented: "I'm so impressed."

Joanna highlighted that whilst travelling around Europe with her case, many airlines didn't bother to weigh it - but if this does happen and your case is overweight then you may need to pay a fee to put it in the hold.
