Former Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has responded to his decision to retire from football with an emotional message on social media.

Just days after his contract at Anfield ended, the Spaniard announced that he will hang up his boots at the age of 33. The decision comes after an injury-hit 2023/24 campaign where he played just five minutes of football.

Thiago has now taken to social media to send a message to fans. The midfielder also seems to send a hint on continuing to work in football in the future.

He wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “I will always be willing to give back what I have been given and I am grateful for the time I have enjoyed it.

“Thank you, football. And to all who accompanied me and made me a better player and person along the way. See you soon, Thiago.”

The message was posted alongside four pictures that show him playing for Barcelona, Spain, Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

Thiago joined the Reds in September 2020, signing from Bayern Munich for an initial £20 million. He played a total of 98 times across four seasons for the Reds, scoring three times and providing a further six assists.

There was reported interest from Saudi Arabia after the player’s departure from Liverpool was confirmed before the end of last season. But the decision to retire now means that Thiago will take the next step in his career.

It is still to be seen in what direction he will go in. But it seems that he may remain in football in some capacity, whether that be through coaching or media work.
