How to revive a former coal mine city with culture, design and nature-based solutions? In Katowice for the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) Cities-meet-Cities programme that I'm coordinating, I had the chance to deep-dive into the urban strategies carried out by the Polish city in recent years. The transformation of a coal mine site, active until 1992, into a culture park with concert halls, museums and a conference centre contributed to regenerate a portion of the city centre and improve the quality of life and events for residents and visitors (COP 24 and the last edition of UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) World Urban Forum were organized here). The action of urban regeneration was combined to strategies for promoting the use of public spaces and the creation of nature-based solutions, fostering the committment of the city towards urban quality and environmental protection URBACT European Urban Initiative Covenant of Mayors - Europe Katowice City - live, work & invest
