The UvA Data Science Centre (DSC) and Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) are joining forces by opening up a joint fellowship opportunity. This call is open to research projects that aim to contribute to our understanding of how the science and research system as a knowledge infrastructure interacts with governmental, NGO and corporate databases and social media, and how this changes the organization and production of knowledge. For this call, the IAS and DSC are looking for proposals that are aligned with the theme Knowledge Infrastructures. We explicitly welcome joint applications from small teams of researchers that combine expertise in data science and other research areas, possibly in combination with philosophy of science and science and technology approaches.    Interested or curious? 🔍 What is data science, and what does a data scientist do...? Today, we shine the Data Science Centre Spotlight on Max van Spengler, PhD Candidate at the VIS Lab and ACTA, and part of our Interdisciplinary PhD programme. Max explores hyperbolic geometry in deep learning, modifying existing techniques and developing new ones to enhance model performance. 📚 One of the projects he is most proud of is the Hyperbolic Learning Library (HypLL), that enables easy creation of hyperbolic models with PyTorch. Its popularity since release is a testament to its impact. Waarom is het zo belangrijk dat we praktijkgericht onderzoek niet alleen beoordelen op het publiceren van artikelen? “Je bent professional, veranderaar én innovator.” Dat is hoe praktijkgericht onderzoek er in het beste geval uit ziet volgens Soemitro Poerbodipoero. Hij onderzoekt hoe Stichting Kraktie, een organisatie uit Amsterdam Zuidoost, veerkracht en participatie van thuiswonende senioren verbetert. In dit vierluik reflecteren hij, Gerben ter Riet, Marta Malé-Alemany en Reint Jan Renes op het unieke karakter van praktijkgericht onderzoek, dat wordt gekenmerkt door de verbinding tussen onderwijs, onderzoek en samenwerking met de praktijk. Onderzoekers in het hbo moeten dus niet alleen beoordeeld worden met cijfermatige indicatoren, stelt Gerben ter Riet. Op zijn initiatief is de Hogeschool van Amsterdam de eerste hogeschool van Nederland die het CoARA statement heeft ondertekend (Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment). Een mooie stap naar werkelijk open wetenschap. En een transitie waarin ook de Bibliotheek een belangrijke ondersteunende rol heeft! 📢 Join us for a special lecture scheduled this Monday 17 June by Elisa Omodei, hosted by the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) as part of the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science. Elisa Omodei, Assistant Professor at the Central European University and former lead data scientist at the UN World Food Programme, is an expert in leveraging data science to address the needs of vulnerable populations. In her talk, she will share her expertise on using non-traditional data and computational methods for social impact. Her talk will highlight her work on predicting food insecurity using conflict, weather, and economic data. Launched in 2021, the UvA Data Science Centre (DSC), part of the University Library, is a coordinating hub and facilitator for data-driven research within the Universiteit van Amsterdam. Our mission is to enhance the university’s research by developing, sharing, and promoting data science methods and technologies across faculties. Every year, we look back on achievements and successes of the past year. We are excited to share our 2023 Highlight Report! Key Highlights: 🚀 DSC Community Growth: With over 70 affiliate members from every UvA faculty, we’ve surpassed our goal of 36 FTE by 2025. Our community continues to thrive with training sessions, seminars, and public platforms to showcase research. 📊 Scientific Impact: Our members co-authored 16 scientific publications, engaged in conference presentations, taught workshops, and participated in key data science events. 🎓 Educational Events: From seminars on AI in HR management to workshops on deep learning, we’ve facilitated numerous learning opportunities. Notable highlights were the event on the Societal Impact of AI, Data Science Day and the annual Away Day on Generative AI. 🏆 Programmes and Initiatives: We supported 8.5 FTE hires across multiple faculties in our Accelerate Programme and announced a new research programme (HAVA-Lab) on human aligned Video-AI involving all 7 (!) UvA faculties. We provided expertise for innovative projects in the humanities and social sciences in our Research Software Engineering Support programme. ✨ Meet our Data Science Centre Affiliate Member for this month: Jacobus Dijkman, PhD Candidate at the Computational Chemistry Group of the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (University of Amsterdam) and the Amsterdam Machine Learning Lab at the Informatics Institute.   Jacobus is part of our Interdisciplinary PhD programme, and his research is pushing boundaries in molecular science by aiming to achieve the ideal balance of speed and precision in computational models. This past year, he made a significant breakthrough by being among the first to successfully integrate neural networks into a thermodynamic framework for describing molecular dynamics.   “This paves the way for a powerful and fast alternative to traditional molecular simulations.
