Future Leader Fellow UK Research and Innovation Dr Laura Wolz, from our Department of Physics & Astronomy, has joined forces with others to share insights into the challenges of trying to navigate travel as academics with caring responsibilities. Read the journal here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eZERiQn9.
Last September, I met two brilliant UK Research and Innovation Future Leader Fellows incidentally also called Laura -Laura Jane Pallett and Laura Carter- at a leadership training and we bonded over research, career advice and navigating academia, while also caring for our small children. Fast forward to now, we have now written a Nature Careers Column, calling for urgent change how work travel is supported in the system and outlining a strategy how institutions and funders can provide the much needed support for carers in academia. https://lnkd.in/eYGiJpQU This article's publication precedes our upcoming project (funded by the UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellows Development Network) to investigate the scale of the problem, and to gather evidence to deliver a set of recommendations and suggestions for funders and institutes to better support those balancing caring and career as an academic.
