About us

Powering Progress sets out Shell’s strategy to transition our business to net-zero emissions by 2050. This includes reducing emissions from our own operations and the energy products we sell to customers. With 95% of Shell's emissions coming from the energy products we provide, achieving net zero emissions relies on collaborating with customers to help them access a secure supply of energy that is affordable and increasingly low carbon. For low carbon solutions to be widely accessible, commercially viable and have an impact at scale, both our customers and Shell need to achieve this transition profitably and sustainably. Shell Low Carbon Solutions (LCS) is committed to providing the secure energy customers need today while transforming to win in a low carbon future. By combining Shell's extensive sectoral experience and solutions expertise, we design, deliver, and scale impactful decarbonisation pathways for customers in hard-to-abate transport and industry sectors, as well as Shell’s own operations. We pursue Powering Progress with unwavering focus and disciplined delivery, tackling the financial and technical challenges involved in decarbonisation, so we can deliver more value with less emissions.

Today we are announcing that Avelia, Shell Aviation’s blockchain-powered sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) book and claim solution, is expanding to Denmark with DCC & Shell Aviation Denmark A/S. The agreement marks Avelia’s evolution to becoming an industry solution. By allowing third-party companies like DCC & Shell Aviation Denmark to offer Avelia's services, our aim is to create a network effect that could help to rapidly accelerate SAF adoption across the aviation sector. Through Avelia, DCC & Shell Aviation Denmark customers looking to reduce emissions from their business travel or air freight transport will be able to purchase environmental attributes associated with fully traceable SAF. Made possible by a book and claim chain of custody model, the allocation of the environmental attributes and the delivery of SAF are securely recorded and tracked using blockchain, a tamper-proof digital database. • We are pleased to share that our Executive Vice President, Anna Mascolo has been appointed to the Board of Directors at Raízen. Raizen is a Brazilian energy company, formed as a joint venture between Shell plc and Cosan in 2011. Raizen is a vertically integrated energy company, operating across sugarcane cultivation, ethanol production, distribution of fuels and lubricants across Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, as well as investment in renewable energy solutions. With its unique blend of traditional downstream supply, distribution, retail, and B2B channels, combined with agri-based sugar and ethanol value chains, Raizen is well positioned to drive decarbonisation profitably and at scale. In 2023, Raizen produced 3.12 billion litres of ethanol, making it one of the world’s biggest bioethanol producers, delivering some of the lowest carbon intensity biofuels available today. Raizen is also looking to expand further into the ethanol value chain with opportunities in bio-methane (RNG), SAF (alcohol-to-jet), and bio-chemicals. #BioFuels #EnergyTransition #Decarbonisation

  • Today Shell announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for Polaris, a carbon capture project which will capture approximately 650,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from the Shell-owned Scotford refinery and chemicals complex*. Polaris will build on the success of the Shell-operated Quest carbon capture and storage facility at Scotford which has safely captured and stored more than nine million tonnes of CO2 since 2015.   Carbon capture and storage is a key technology to achieve climate goals and for Shell to become a net-zero energy business by 2050.   #PoweringProgress #CCS *Cautionary note: https://lnkd.in/gi_wDYdR

Today Shell announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for Polaris, a carbon capture project at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park, Scotford in Alberta, Canada. Polaris will capture approximately 650,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from the Shell-owned Scotford refinery and chemicals complex. In addition to the Polaris FID, Shell also announced FID to proceed with the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub in partnership with ATCO EnPower. The first phase of Atlas will provide permanent underground storage for CO2 captured by the Polaris project. Carbon capture and storage is a key technology to achieve the Paris Agreement climate goals and both the Polaris and Atlas projects are important steps in reducing emissions from our own operations. Once built, Polaris (100% Shell-owned) will have the potential to reduce Scope 1 emissions at the Scotford refinery by up to 40% and by up to 22% at the chemicals complex. Polaris will build on the success of the Shell-operated Quest carbon capture and storage facility at Scotford which has safely captured and stored more than nine million tonnes of CO2 since 2015.   Last year I visited Scotford including the plot space for Polaris, next to Quest. I met the teams who have worked so hard to get to this important milestone. Many congratulations to everyone involved. Both projects are expected to begin operations toward the end of 2028. • Polaris will capture CO2 from the steam methane reformers (pictured) in the Scotford refinery.
  • The transport and road freight sectors keep the world moving and we all rely on them every day. Their importance makes it even more vital we find ways to decarbonise these sectors. And this is where bio-LNG can play a crucial role. It can be used directly as an alternative to fossil-based LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) in LNG vehicles and offers significantly lower GHG lifecycle emissions across the well-to-wheel lifecycle of the fuel than LNG or fossil-based diesel*. To learn more about how bio-LNG is helping to decarbonise heavy-duty transport, sign up below to attend Shell Commercial Road Transport’s LinkedIn live event on July 4th. This is where executives from Scania Group, Dinotrans and Shell will discuss the role of bio-LNG in steering the sector towards a sustainable future. #BioLNG #Decarbonisation *BioLNG in Transport: https://lnkd.in/dqPrJ_cX

  • Excited to see policy in action at this year’s Hydrogen Council International CEO event! Shell Low Carbon Solutions EVP Anna Mascolo was a participant at the roundtable discussion, where the dialogue centred on boosting competitiveness and forging new trade partnerships, amongst other topics. Shell’s own investments in REFHYNE I in Germany and Holland Hydrogen I in the Netherlands support the build-up of the hydrogen economy, and government and policy support will further drive business confidence as we work towards a lower carbon future. #hydrogen #poweringprogress

What is biomethane? Chemically, biomethane is identical to conventional natural gas. Made by processing organic waste such as food waste, agricultural residues or manure under a controlled environment known as anaerobic digestion, it is a near-pure source of methane. But there’s more worth knowing. The anaerobic digestion process used to create biomethane also produces a by-product known as digestate. This digestate is an organic material, rich in nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, meaning that it can act as a degassed organic fertiliser. This is a valuable resource, as it can be returned to the farmers who have provided feedstocks, to use as a fertiliser on their crop land. By utilising digestate effectively, we can close the loop, minimise waste, and align with circular economy principles. Find out more in our latest video.  #Biofuels #Biomethane #CircularEconomy #EnergyTransition
