A look into Walgreens’ entry into virtual care and the larger trend of retailers’ efforts to establish a foothold in the virtual care world.
Last week, Walgreens announced plans to launch a virtual healthcare service becoming the latest in a string of retailers, including Costco Wholesale and Walmart, to enter the telehealth arena. This begs the question: can retailers succeed where other companies have failed in virtual care? Some experts, like Rock Health’s Chris Lew, believe they can. “Retailers uniquely bring a physical scale and community presence that are hugely valuable for delivering an omnichannel experience,” he said in a recent interview with mHealthIntelligence. Four themes emerged from the hours of comments provided by healthcare stakeholders nationwide to the Drug Enforcement Administration about virtual prescribing flexibilities for controlled substances. Read more below.
“Mandating in-person visits prior to prescribing controlled medications in this unique population would create a devastating burden to these patients, and it would delay their ability to obtain these medications in a timely fashion” “But the community providers in FQHCs [federally qualified health centers] certainly expressed to me that they are worried about a free-for-all of remote providers. It takes away their business; it makes their clinic less resilient” “The 30-day initiation would not be adequate given the current wait times, given the shortages — 70 percent of counties with no child psychiatrist, 55 percent with no psychiatrist — [it] would not be adequate for evidence-based medicine” These are just some of the comments shared at the Drug Enforcement Administration’ telemedicine listening sessions. The agency held the sessions to determine the future of regulations that enable virtual prescribing of controlled substances without a prior in-person exam — a hot-button topic in healthcare.
