About us

Telepresence has been initially driven by the need of obtaining information and to act in environments that for humans are extremely difficult to reach, or extremely dangerous to operate in, such as space, and high radiation disaster zones. Telesurgery reflects another need, of a human expert, to perform a highly specialized operation at a remote location. Gradually, telepresence is making its impact in most sectors of the life, with a promise to reduce cost in offering a broad range of services, to meet societal needs. It already allows remote operators to act as if present in a remote cabin/control room, pilots to operate drones, specialized workers to operate heavy equipment, to drive agricultural machines, or drive surface vehicles. COVID-19 has brought telemedicine to a new level that would perhaps take more years to obtain acceptance – many of the routine ‘visits’ to primary physicians are now over video-conferencing tools, a simple form of telepresence. Telemedicine is only an example, other forms of telepresence have also accelerated to face restrictions in travel, access to the workplace, etc.

The First IEEE Conference on Telepresence, IEEE TELEPRESENCE 2024 IEEE TELEPRESENCE 2024 will be held November 16-17, 2024, at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), in Pasadena, California. The conference will provide a stimulating forum for researchers, educators, and practitioners to learn, share knowledge, report the most recent innovations and developments, and exchange ideas and advances in all aspects of telepresence systems and applications, telerobotics, human-machine interfaces, learning from humans, and autonomy. Integrative approaches are particularly welcome. IEEE TELEPRESENCE 2024 will feature keynotes and invited talks, industry panels, technical presentations, and exhibits to enrich fruitful discussions. Full papers will be published in IEEE Xplore. For authors who do not yet have publishable results but want to present the latest results, work in progress, applications, and/or new projects, short late-breaking papers will also be accepted. Note that these short papers will be published in the on-line conference proceedings available to registrants, but not on IEEE Xplore. Confirmed speakers: Oussama Khatib (Stanford Univ.), John Blitch (Colonel US Army, retired), Ming Hou (DRD Canada), Witold Kisner (Univ. of Manitoba, Canada), Neal Lii (DLR Germany), Kamak Ebadi (Mars Analog Astronaut) Timeline: Full Paper Submission: May 23, 2024 Full Paper Acceptance: June 27, 2024 Late-Breaking Submission Deadline: July 15, 2024 Late-Breaking Submission Decisions: July 22, 2024 Final Camera-Ready Paper/Submission Deadline: August 7, 2024 Early-Bird Registration (required for camera-ready submission): August 7, 2024 Late Registration: November 13, 2024 Website: https://lnkd.in/gCQmJ8_B Advisory Committee: Allison Okamura, David Kaber, David Locke, Edward Tunstel, Leila Takayama, Terry Fong, Robert Mueller, Saeid Nahavandi. Technical Co-Sponsorship: IEEE Initiative on Telepresence, IEEE RAS TC on Telerobotics, IEEE SMC TC on Robotics and Intelligent Sensing and IEEE SMC TC on Brain-Machine Systems.
