We’re extremely proud to celebrate every one of our #graduates at The University of Manchester! 🎓 We’ve also loved the opportunity to thank those who gave them a helping hand along the way. 👏 A round of applause for the supportive families and friends too. For listening to us complain when we're tired, for pointing us in the right direction when we need it, and for always celebrating our wins, no matter how small.

Get ready to celebrate 200 years of academic excellence at The University of Manchester ! 🎉 Did you know? The first nursing degree in England was established right here in Manchester by the former School of Nursing Studies. 🏥 In another historic first, the first professor of nursing in England was also appointed at the university! From the world's first commercial EMI CT scanner to important advancements in gunshot wounds and shell shock treatment during World War I, they've always been at the forefront of nursing innovation. In particular, Manchester has been a hub of world-firsts in cancer research, including the first clinical use of Tamoxifen for breast cancer and the first single harvest blood stem-cell transplant. What an incredible venue to host #NI2024 during the fun of #UoM200! #Nursing #Conferencefun #Celebration #Anniversary

The Michael Smith Building has been transformed this month by our Artist in Residence, Geinene Carson. The celebration of the arts and the sciences has been on display for all to see! Geinene has spent some time visiting the labs The University of Manchester and interpreting these in a unique and inspiring way. Huge congratulations to those in the Faculty and at Creative Manchester at The University of Manchester, for their drive to make this a reality. The showcase event also encouraged scientists and researchers from the Faculty to share their own work too.

"With Nothing But a Pipette And a Microscope" In 2020, when I started my PhD at The University of Manchester, I immediately noticed that the university would celebrate its #bicentennial anniversary in 2024. The notion of being part of an institution with such a rich historical legacy filled me with a sense of pride, as if I had become a part of its 200-year journey. From admiring Rutherford’s groundbreaking work on nuclear structure to Chadwick's discovery of neutrons, to wearing Graphene-based N95 masks during the COVID-19 pandemic, the weight of history felt palpable. So, when I was invited to participate in the bicentennial celebration and represent the Manchester Cancer Research Centre at the Universally Manchester Festival, I was beyond ecstatic. On the day of the event, our entire team was overwhelmed by the interest shown in our work. However, my favorite moment of the day came from an unexpected source: a curious five-year-old who asked me about evolution and mutations. It was a unique challenge to explain such complex concepts to someone so young and without prior knowledge. I came up with an analogy that I was quite pleased with, but my pride was soon humbled when the child asked the age-old question, "How did life begin?" For once, I found myself speechless, a rare occurrence for those who know me well! I confessed that we don't know the answer, but that's precisely why we're here. As scientists, we strive to answer the unanswerable and venture into the unknown, with nothing but a pipette and a microscope! #universityofmanchester #UoM200 #CancerResearch #HowDidLifeBegin?

A group of 10 Medical students from University of Manchester are currently at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital in Western Kenya. In addition to doing their regular elective placements, they will be working with their local counterparts to implement the Early Warning Scores on the surgical wards in Kisii. Using student exchange programs to introduce system wide changes in health services through a Service Learning Framework is an interesting concept worth further consideration.

Researchers at The University of Manchester are to trial a system that allows people living with rheumatoid #arthritis to send their daily symptoms securely to their health record, in a first for the NHS. The Remote Monitoring of Rheumatoid Arthritis (REMORA) system allows patients to download a symptom tracking app to their smartphone or tablet. The technology will help patients answer a painfully difficult question asked by doctors: “How have you been in the last six months?” Professor Will Dixon said, “By tracking symptoms day-to-day and making them automatically available at consultations within the electronic medical record, we will generate a clearer picture of how someone has been in the last six months which could have a transformative impact on treatment and care.” The trial is funded by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) and Versus Arthritis. https://lnkd.in/e25i_fck
