Construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge over the Detroit River between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit recently reached a milestone with the mid-span closure connecting the center of the 1.5-mile-long bridge. Each side has 27 deck segments, which left a 36-ft gap between the two sides. Making the center connection involved a four-week process of placing temporary bents, and installing the steel girders, beams and precast concrete panels before removing the bents. While work is not yet complete, the connection makes the Howe bridge the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America and 10th longest in the world. Sherone Brown had been working at AECOM’s legacy company, Maunsell, for one year when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005. Throughout her fight spanning almost two decades and a second diagnosis in 2018, Sherone has worked and connected with our teams in Perth, Townsville and Brisbane, where she’s now based. Sherone visited our Sunny Coast, Gold Coast and Brisbane teams last month to share her story, and her connection to and support from her personal and professional community was an inspirational through-line in her breast cancer journey – there were a few misty eyes in the crowds gathered!💖 Across Australia, we went PINK 🌸 to raise over $13k for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, with AECOM matching $4k through our Give Back program. Like Sherone, we are proud to advocate for life-saving research. 🎀💰 Thank you for sharing your story, Sherone, and to our teams for getting behind this important cause. #AECOMLife #GoPink #BreastCancerAwareness

On July 30, Chief Executive of our global Water business, Beverley Stinson, participated in a private sector roundtable at the White House as part of the PREPARE Call to Action led by the U.S. Department of State and USAID. There, she met with Senior Advisor to the President John Podesta, USAID Administrator Samantha Power, and leaders from other private companies participating in the PREPARE Call to Action to discuss strategies for the private sector to invest in community resilience to climate change. At the roundtable, Beverley shared AECOM’s new commitment to support PREPARE by strengthening urban resilience in developing countries through our PlanEngage digital solution. As part of this investment, we will collaborate with cities in USAID cooperating countries to share experience and capabilities in resilience planning. “For over 50 years, AECOM has been a trusted USAID partner, implementing architecture and engineering and climate change projects around the globe,” said Beverley. “We are very proud of our collaboration with USAID and to be joining hands with the Department of State and USAID to share innovative solutions that reduce the impacts of climate change in vulnerable communities.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eRxmY6MM #AECOM

Studies have shown that minority and marginalized communities are significantly more vulnerable to the impacts of disasters. Using FEMA's approach as a guide, our Disaster Resilience Lead Jordanna Rubin shares five key steps for building an effective, equitable framework for disaster response and recovery at regional and local levels. “To support the most vulnerable,” she writes, “disaster planners, emergency managers and recovery professionals must prioritize equitable strategies covering pre- and post-disaster response and recovery.” Read more from Jordanna about how equity-focused strategies can shorten the disaster lifecycle, reduce disproportionate impacts and promote community resilience: https://lnkd.in/eyQ4FfnB #AECOM #SustainableLegacies #AECOMIndigenousEngagement

We’re pleased to announce that Jordanna Rubin has taken on a new role leading our Disaster Resilience team. “Our commitment to preparedness means our clients can trust us to be there when it matters most,” said AECOM East Regional Chief Executive Bane Gaiser. “Jordanna is a highly capable leader. Her vast experience working with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver people-focused solutions is a great benefit to our clients and the communities we serve.” AECOM West Regional Chief Executive Matthew Crane agrees. “We live in an increasingly complex world, but our Disaster Resilience professionals empower our clients at the local, state, and federal levels to safeguard their communities,” he said. “We’re energized to have Jordanna guiding this important work.” With more than 20 years of experience implementing resilient and equitable disaster recovery programs, Jordanna has worked for local and federal government agencies, academia, and the A/E/C industry, including four years with AECOM. “Our teams continue to adapt and refine the ways that we deliver emergency response and recovery programs,” she said, noting the evolving complexity of disasters in recent years. “We’re focusing on excellence in delivery, innovation, and compassionate care.” The catalyst for Jordanna’s longtime dedication to building resilient communities was a personal experience during Hurricane Andrew in 1992. As the Category 5 storm made landfall in Florida, she found herself crouched under the kitchen table with her family. “I remember the fear and helplessness we felt,” she said. “Our family was beyond lucky. We heard stories of friends losing their homes, friends huddled in their cars when the roof tore off, schools destroyed, and infrastructure damaged.” Since then, she’s built her career helping communities mitigate the impacts of disaster. Whether it’s developing a food security program during the pandemic, protecting an Indigenous coastal community from rising sea levels, or incorporating equity into state-level disaster relief programs, Jordanna’s motivation stays the same. “People are at the heart of the work we do in disaster response and recovery,” she said. ”We’re there to help people get their lives back and remain resilient into the future.” Read more about Jordanna: https://lnkd.in/e3N74xAT Learn more about our work: www.aecom.com/ready #AECOM #SustainableLegacies

Senior Project Manager, AECOM Water | Passionate about our Planet | Navy Veteran

2-yr anniversary: USN -> AECOM 😊 Normally at the 2 year point, we’d be packing up the family on orders and moving on to the next unknown… new job, new location, new schools, new(ish) life.  Great experiences and opportunities to explore and diversify our lives, but also challenging and stressful across multiple fronts. This year, we’re not looking at where our future home will have to be, but how we can continue to build the life here where we want to be.  The challenges and stress hasn’t stopped (life is adaptation), they are just objectively and time-spatially different now. [I may have made that word up, but I think it fits the intent 😉] As I continue to develop my new career I want to specifically thank my advocates and coaches, Michel A. Laudier PMP, Zsolt Nagy, GISP, Yigal Bar-Av, PMP, Shane Parson, Justin Vandever, PE, and Nicole Boothman-Shepard, for using their valuable time helping me to understand and grow at AECOM - Water…and especially my supervisor, David Rubenstein, CFM, PMP, and Marcia Tobin, AICP, for allowing me the space to learn and experience the various opportunities for that growth while keeping me on trajectory. Cheers to another year! #veterans, #militarytransition, #AECOM

Today’s People Spotlight features Sean Gilchrist, an industry director from our AECOM - Water business in Australia.    Sean’s entry into the water sector began with a recommendation from his university professor — kickstarting a long and fulfilling career that's allowed him to travel the world. In his 13 years with us, he has worked in a wide range of roles, from project management to environmental engineering, wastewater treatment, impact assessments and more.    Currently, he and his team are delivering sustainable solutions that tackle water security challenges in Australia, where there are limited water resources. By diversifying drinking water sources through large-scale water recycling and desalination projects, they are helping communities become more resilient during times of drought and ensuring access to a clean drinking water supply for generations to come.    Read more about his work: https://lnkd.in/ekU2VB9D   #AECOM #AECOMVoices
