Many have noted that the lack of comprehensive regulations aimed at operationalizing the election law in #Syria has effectively created a one party system. “The Syrian electoral administration system is designed to centralize control under the president through the judicial system, governors, and the MoI. This structure eliminates any meaningful chance for truly independent elections, as every key aspect of the electoral process can be traced back to presidential influence or control,” explain Vladimir Pran and Maroun Sfeir. Read their take unpacking the role of Syria’s institutions in administering elections and the candidates.

I spoke with Simone McCarthy for this @CNN article on China's attempts to be a more active mediator in global conflicts. On its diplomatic efforts in the Middle East: Within the region, there is also a sense that some of Beijing’s broader diplomacy around the conflict may be “missing out on the intricacies” of different viewpoints there, while seeking to win backing for its own international agenda, according to Jonathan Fulton, a nonresident senior fellow for the Atlantic Council’s Middle East programs. “Of course there’s frustration with the West and in particular with the US, but at the same time nobody’s looking at China and saying, ‘well, this is the country that’s going to come and solve it,’ because they see it as very self-interested actor with a pretty shallow level of regional knowledge and expertise,” he said. https://lnkd.in/dm3QKWr9 #china #mena #mediation #gaza #palestine

I spoke with CNN's Simone McCarthy for this piece on China's engagement with the Palestinian actors that participated in last weekend's Beijing meetings. I'm far more skeptical than the quotes let on - bridging these groups is a near-impossible task, in my opinion, and I don't see how China has the diplomatic network or capital to pull it off. China is promoting an idea that it is “doing the impossible – bringing these oppositional sides together,” said Jonathan Fulton, a nonresident senior fellow for the Atlantic Council’s Middle East programs. “It fits (their) narrative that the US is the wedge issue, that Western involvement in the Middle East created these divisions and China can come in and ease them … but I don’t know that China really is seen (in the region) as a credible actor who can do much,” he said, pointing to Beijing’s relatively limited regional expertise and influence to ensure the success of the agreements or solutions it supports. https://lnkd.in/d4bRzf_T #china #mena #palestine #hamas #fatah

I argue in this piece for Chatham House that "like other previous declarations on Palestinian unity, this one is likely to be a mirage. But China, Fatah, and Hamas have each clinched their own victories." Read in full to find out more👇

Egypt’s non-oil sector is finally showing signs of recovery after enduring years of contraction exacerbated by inflation and foreign exchange shortages. In June, the country’s non-oil private sector saw a notable increase in sales volumes, marking its first expansion since August 2021, according to the latest S&P Global Egypt Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) report. Racha Helwa, economist and director of the Empower Middle East Initiative at the Atlantic Council, told Business Monthly that the marginal improvement reflects a modestly positive response from the business community to recent structural reforms implemented by the Egyptian government in collaboration with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). “Continuing these reforms is crucial for enhancing Egypt’s competitiveness, improving the business environment, and supporting growth in the export sector and green economy,” stated Helwa. She emphasized that the IMF-supported economic stabilization program holds significant potential to benefit Egypt’s manufacturing sector. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dehr9WSw By Doaa A.Moneim
