LCI has announced a framework agreement for up to 21 of the latest generation helicopters from Leonardo, comprising of 10 firm plus 11 options. The innovative new framework agreement covers the latest generation light-intermediate Leonardo AW169, intermediate AW139 and super-medium AW189 helicopters, which will collectively address industry renewal and replacement requirements. The new helicopters will be delivered through to 2028 and will be aimed at a variety of missions including emergency medical services (EMS), search-and-rescue (SAR), offshore energy, including wind. The helicopters will be strategically allocated between LCI and SMFL LCI Helicopters, LCI’s joint venture with Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing Company, Limited (SMFL). They will offer superior performance, flexibility, and lower CO2 emissions than comparable types and other transportation modes, thereby helping operators to reduce their carbon footprint whilst maintaining mission-critical and life-saving operations. In addition, they will be equipped with the latest suite of navigational and safety features and will also be cleared to use sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) in the future, leveraging the certification standards already obtained by Leonardo for SAF use. We want to help customers, operators and end-users to grow sustainably whilst using some of the most modern, efficient and technologically innovative helicopters in the skies.” These commitments build upon LCI’s decade long partnership with Leonardo during which it has already taken delivery of over 50 helicopters making it one of the manufacturer’s largest customers for new equipment. Vestas, in partnership with HeliService, has initiated a groundbreaking pilot project using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to transport technicians and jack-up crew to Iberdrola’s Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm in Germany. This project, highlighted in an article by Adrijana B. for offshoreWIND.biz, showcases the first-time use of helicopters flying on approximately 40% SAF during an offshore wind farm construction phase. The project, running until September 2024, is expected to save approximately 32% in CO2 emissions per flight compared to conventional jet fuel. This initiative aligns perfectly with Vestas' sustainability strategy, aiming for carbon-neutral operations by 2030 and significant emission reductions in the supply chain. Kieran Walsh, Senior Vice President and Head of Construction at Vestas Northern & Central Europe, stated the high potential for SAF in offshore operations, emphasising the need for more sustainable solutions during wind farm construction and operation phases. Baltic Eagle, a joint venture between Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) and Iberdrola, is set to feature 50 Vestas V174-9.5 MW turbines and is scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2024. Initiatives like this pilot project are crucial for the future of renewable energy. Felicity Bradstock has a slight bias in this article - for OilPrice.com - “ Jayant Mukhopadhaya, an aviation researcher with The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), explained: "Because aeroplanes live so long - they have 20- to 30-year lifespans - the fleet renewal rates are so slow that any #aircraft being bought today is likely going to be in operation in 2050." He added that assuming the first #hydrogen-combustion narrow-body aircraft enter the market in 2035, "by 2050, it can only capture maybe 10 percent -20 percent of its maximum market cap." Ocean technology breakthrough: Engineers are harnessing #windpower to chart a course toward a decarbonized #maritime shipping industry.   The first vessel (#PyxisOcean cargo ship) utilizing newly installed “WindWings”, began its maiden journey this past week. The #PyxisOcean cargo ship (owned by Mitsubishi Corporation & chartered by U.S. shipping giant Cargill) was retro fitted with two “WindWings” and is a fantastic achievement and a fascinating story for the approach and coming greener future for wind assisted propulsion! And in the coming weeks, the second vessel (#BergeBulk cargo ship) utilizing four newly installed “WindWings” will additionally begin its maiden journey.   What are WindWings? This new maritime solution is a patent pending evolution of sail technology for wind assisted propulsion to ships using wind power as a non-depleting resource.   How does this #innovation differ from traditional sails? WindWings are: - Made of steel and composite fiberglass (similar material as wind turbines) rather than natural or synthetic sailcloth. - Stand at a towering approx. 50 meters tall. - Have two extensions (leading and trailing edges) that utilize the concept of wind forces around an aviation wing (hence “WindWings”).   The “WindWings” is a joined venture between the developers — UK engineering firm BAR Technologies and Norwegian company Yara Marine Technologies — and attest each unit ("WindWing") can save a cargo ship 1.5 tonnes of fuel per day, resulting in lifetime emission reduction of as much as 30% (this reportedly varies depending on new builds vs. retrofits, and hydrodynamic hull optimization efforts).   Link for #PyxisOcean: https://lnkd.in/erbieMTj Link for #BergeOlympus: https://lnkd.in/eY8PnQvt
