Your resume isn't working!

Your resume isn't working!

If you are like most job seekers you are focusing on the wrong goal.

Companies that post job advertisements get thousands of resumes each month. At the same time, job seekers are obsessed with creating great resumes that show their experience best.

Hiring companies do not want resumes. They don't even want your best resume.

They want a match for the job. And, frankly, most of the resume details you obsess over, like resume length, are irrelevant if you match the job.

Now you know the secret: you need to match the job to get the job. When it is written that way it makes you wonder why you ever took a different approach. Don't beat yourself up, it gets worse. We need to understand the matching process to understand the scale of your misperception.

There are two gates you have to pass to get traction with the hiring company:

  1. You need to get identified as a candidate by the automated applicant filter.
  2. You need to be so obvious that a recruiter will want to send you to the hiring manager

As you author your resume you picture the hiring manager reading your resume and smiling. The manager quickly realizes you are an incredible fit and understands, from your track record of monumental resourcefulness, that you can easily figure out the minor parts of the job you do not know.

The 2000's are calling and they want their resume back. To pass the two gates you have to assume the opposite of your hiring manager fantasy.

Here is the required mindset to get to the hiring manager:

  1. The applicant filter criteria were written by someone who knows nothing about the experience required to be good at that job and has no creativity whatsoever. None.
  2. The recruiter does not know the company's industry and does not understand the job much less the subtleties of being excellent at the job.

Are you starting to see the disconnect?

The hiring company is going to expend significant effort to hire the right person. If you want to be the right person you need to put in a little effort to tailor your resume with the exact keywords, job titles and required experience listed in the job description.

Your goal is to get through the two gates and to the hiring manager. Your goal is not to get hired. That is your goal once you get to the hiring manager.
