Your Authentic Self

“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.” ― C.G. Jung

Living your life authentically is about making a series of choices about who you show up to “be” daily. For many of us, the quest toward authenticity has been challenging. We may pretend to be someone who we are not. We may say yes, when we mean no.  Even then, isn’t this who we are in that very moment? Are we being authentic even in our own humanly imperfect ways?

Why is it important to be truly authentic?

Being authentic takes a focused and concerted effort initially. To live from a place of truth and self-acceptance takes courage, persistence and a conscious desire to be free of external constraints and step fully into our power as humans. In contrast, living from “the others” place, (where outside opinions are more important than our own), we never embody our true selves.  Why is this important? Being authentic serves as a gateway to all aspects of our lives. When we are authentic, we are:

Accepting: When we accept ourselves, we are submitting to the highest form of self-care. This is where love originates. There is a belief that until we learn to love and accept ourselves, only then can we offer this gift to others. This means accepting our humanity, mistakes, errors in judgment and loving ourselves anyway.

Truthful and Trustworthy:  When we live authentically; others instinctively trust us. Authentic people tend to be more consistent in their interactions with the world because they know who they are and believe in themselves. They are not easily swayed by external events and are accountable for their own actions.  Neuroscientists know the brain seeks predictable outcomes in its quest to reduce fear and anxiety and increase safety and trust. Authenticity intuitively feels safe.

Present Focused: Acting from a place of knowledge and “in the moment” wisdom cultivates a creative way to live.  Authenticity is about presence, living in the moment with principle and self-assurance and staying true to our own beliefs. An authentic person is easy and comfortable, loving and genuine.

Empowered: Living from a self -directed place allows us to experience life in our own unique way. It is an assertive quality that seeks to claim a place in life, without limiting this experience for others.  Living from the inside out has a resonant quality, tone, and mastery.

Empathetic:  The most successful people are deeply empathetic because they “see” what other people need/want without taking anything away from themselves. Their personal power is not diminished by others. They live from a place of inner wisdom, empathy & compassion.

Detached: We learn that standing in our own truth, being our own person and living life from a present focused place allows us to be detached. This gives us freedom to experiment with a variety of solutions as they present themselves, while increasing our ability to learn, grow and change our opinions creatively.

Being Authentic Serves Us and the World

Authenticity in Work: Authenticity in the work space is a very attractive and desirable quality, yet, hard to grow because it falls into the “soft skills” area which is often confused for weakness. The most charismatic and successful leaders of all time are/were genuine. They don’t mince words, “are the real deal”, allow for error in themselves and others, seek to find the best answers, reduce fear-based game playing and are quick to celebrate and acknowledge success in others. Bottom line:  Energy that is free, creates innovation.

 REDUCE FEAR     =    INCREASE CREATIVITY

Personal Lives: When we live from a place of truth and are personally empowered our relationships deepen and become more harmonious. This gives others permission to be who they truly are and grow and evolve in their own way and pace. They are separate from us, yet we experience a deep sense of connection, support and safety. The highest forms of love evolve when we experience authenticity in others as we practice this in ourselves.
