There won’t be a Scottish independence referendum this year or next - nor should there be

Scottish independence is in the news again this week.

And with impeccable timing I was invited to speak at the Foreign Press Association in London about the prospects of Scottish independence. It comes as the U.K. government and Scottish government again do what they do best in these situations - shout at one another.

I don’t want to overstate it but there is significant interest in this from the overseas media with the Spanish press being the most fascinated (for reasons of Catalan precedent). Interviews included Chinese, French, German and Russian media (not RT as they’re not members of the FPA).

Looking at this issue, I’m in the fortunate position of being in a majority in Scotland on both of the recent referendums. I’m one of the 55% who voted to stay in the UK in 2014 and one of the 62% who voted to stay in the EU in 2016.

There won’t be a second independence referendum this year; in truth the SNP don’t want it in 2020. And there won’t be one next year either. Nor should there be.

I’ve posted some pics and slides from the event.
