Why should tech investors care about Special Educational Needs?

Did you know that 15% of all UK students < 25 years old have Special Educational Needs?

Over 1,300,000 in England alone.

15% of our future workforce. 15% of our employees' children. 15% of our next generation.

The outdated system supporting them is inadequate. Providing effective support is a statutory requirement for schools, audited heavily by Ofsted and an emotionally charged topic for all involved.

Paper-based admin, manual repetition and centralised workload takes schools to breaking point. The subsequent effect of inefficiency on students and schools is widely regarded a national crisis with Cabinet-level interest*.

Although funding is largely available, the ability to secure it within gov timescales, with appropriate evidence and an informed roll-out plan is resource intensive unless streamlined. The effect of neglecting SEND students is costly for our society, our economy and on individual opportunity.

...£170,000 per SEN student in fact**...

Student data is loaded, intelligently indexed, overviewed and tasks are distributed to relevant staff for review and comment. The online suite acts as a wingman, control centre and performance coach for all school staff directed by their existing SEN co-ordinator (a senior role). Project management features support senior leadership to make resource forecasts and informs strategic planning. The feedback is unanimously positive from the front line.

A national roll-out of such a tool which will see the UK unlocking a new talent pool, reducing mental health impact on teaching staff and avoiding generation-length unemployment costs for a vertical cross-section of skillsets throughout the population.

Provision can scale from students with profound & complex needs who aspire towards personal independence through to highly gifted students who process information in a different way to the norm and are capable of pushing the envelope of human understanding. Indeed, a significant proportion of household names dedicate their success to the ability to overcome and exploit their 'Special Needs'; including dyslexia, autism and sensory challenges.
