Where (HE)ART Meets Science: People Analytics at HubSpot

As a practitioner in the people and talent space, I’ve gone to countless conferences, spoken to dozens of my peers across the industry, and followed thought leaders like Laszlo Bock and David Green. One thing is clear - if you’ve ever wondered whether data can fundamentally transform your business impact as an HR professional, the answer is a resounding yes.

At HubSpot, we obsess over our customers and our culture. We’re growing (and hiring) quickly. And our people are our greatest asset when it comes to achieving our goals and fulfilling our mission as a business. We’re proud to be recognized as a best place to work, but it’s not enough. It’s time for us to take our world-class candidate and employee experience and make it more remarkable with data.

As a part of our culture, core values and attributes are important to us. We like people who are Humble, Empathetic, Adaptable, Remarkable, and Transparent - people with HEART. But over the past few years, we’ve moved away from simply deciding on a candidate based on “culture fit” and become more data-driven in our recruiting by assessing candidates based on skills and competencies. We’ve streamlined our processes, introduced consistency into how we evaluate our people at every stage of their life cycle with us, and invested in a core set of systems to house our data. Now, it’s time for us to use what we know about our candidates and hires to make better decisions about where we invest our time recruiting. We need to take that a step further and study our employees to better understand what predicts employee success, such as optimal time in role, ideal team size, even time spent in meetings. We need to marry the art of serving our people with the science of human behavior.

That’s why I’m thrilled to share that we’re building a People Analytics team at HubSpot, and seeking a Manager of People Analytics to lead the charge. We’re only in the very early innings of the game of People Analytics, and in bringing on a leader to our new initiative, we’re determined to explore, experiment, iterate, and ultimately transform our approach to people strategy. By using more data to make people related decisions, we’ll be able to make better, faster, and more objective decisions without relying purely on intuition or a single person’s opinion or unconscious biases. We’ll be able to process all of the internal and external factors that play into performance, and translate that into an inclusive people strategy that anticipates employee sentiment. With People Analytics, we’ll use what we’ve learned from the people of our past to reinvent our approach to the people of our future.

If the success of a team is a direct function of the people working on it, there are countless data-driven questions that can help us isolate variables and further refine our approach to a globally inclusive, remarkable employee experience at scale. If you - or someone you know -  are fascinated by the intersection of art and science in the people space, check out our role, send me a note, and apply. Join me and our truly remarkable People Team and help us take our employees’ experience and performance to a level they (and we) didn’t even know existed.

We’re proud that our employees want to always do their best work. Let’s use data to make that a little bit easier for them.
