What's the Answer to: Big Name in the Mainframe Business?

Today's New York Times Crossword Puzzle's posed this question as the clue for 54 across:

Big Name in the Mainframe Business?

Hmm?  Is it New York based CA Technologies?  Wrong answer!  CA Technologies can't even get credit for its mainframe business in the hometown paper.  Recent past financial performance probably isn't helping.  As an example, in last night's CA Technologies' earnings call, the CFO stated, "In our Mainframe segment, Q1 mainframe new sales including new product and capacity were down high-teens in constant currency, and down in the mid-20% range as reported."  Probably also didn't help that a CA Technologies' Senior Vice President referred to their Mainframe segment as a "cash cow in the basement" during their last annual worldwide user conference.

So what is the answer to the question: Big Name in the Mainframe Business?  The correct answer is...Compuware!

This gritty crew, based in Detroit, has been working their tails-off on a mission to becoming the best mainframe software partner for the next 50 years.  We've transformed every aspect of the company to best serve our current and future mainframe customers for the decades to come.  We are very proud of the how our deliverables are changing people's vision and strategic value perspective for the mainframe platform.

And...our financial performance demonstrates the sincerity of our passion to reinvent the mainframe.  In stark contrast to CA Technologies' Q1 mainframe new sales at, "down high-teens in constant currency, and down in the mid-20% range as reported,"...Compuware's Q1 new license bookings were up 17% year over year!  This reflects greater than a 3000 basis point differential  in performance of Compuware over CA Technologies' Mainframe segment as reported.

We may have been lost, but now we've been found...at least by CA Technologies' hometown paper the New York Times.  We would be honored by the opportunity to re-engage with former Compuware customers, as well as, newly engage with those that have never been Compuware customers to understand your needs in 2015 and beyond and, in response, show what we've invented to earn our reputation as the answer to the question:, "Big Name in the Mainframe Business?"

Customer Support chez BMC Compuware

I'm just a 1 year employee at Compuware, but few decades in the software industry. I'm impressed by the efforts done by all of us, guided by our management, to improve our products and our development & support processes, to give more 'value' to our customers. And this is achieved with respect for Customers and employees, and trust my experience, respect for customers is a unusual virtue in this business...

We are NOT the same company. As a current and 34 year employee, we're leaner and meaner than we've ever been. Our executive team is really involved and supports what our teams, in the trenches, do each day to support our customers. It's like a comparison between nite and day. We're moved on. We're building on our core technologies and adding many great tools to help our customers in this newest digital age. Go the new Compuware!

As a long time Compuware employee for 27+ years, the past 12 months at Compuware has changed dramatically! People who have returned to Compuware do not recognize the place. Customers who are working with the new Compuware keep pinching themselves because no other mainframe company delivers innovation to the market on a quarterly basis. With Compuware, they see value from their annual maintenance investment. And the employees can see their efforts making a difference in the new digital economy. In fact, the new leadership, mission, agile business model, and account engagement have resulted in 17% Year over Year growth! There is no coincidence that the Social Media channels and the business articles are all buzzing about the resurgence of the mainframe! If you trace back to when all this buzz started, then you would know it started about 12 months ago!
