If We Could Only Remember Our Parenting Advice
This is a post that I have been wanting to write for some time! This Poverb that we teach our children really struck a cord with me. Why is it as kid's we are taught to accept that there is ignorance in the world and we should ignore what people say. But we tend to live in a society as adults that we feel so persecuted by people's words.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best - "Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted"
There is ignorance and sometimes pure stupidity that exists in the world, but as I teach my kids - the only opinion's that matter is that of those we love, trust and respect. All else is senseless noise in a very noisy world
In 2003 - Robert Fulghum wrote a book called "Everything I needed to know I learned in Kindergarten", and although very simple, the rules very much apply today! Here are the simple rule:
- Share everything
- Play fair
- Don't hit people
- Put things back where you found them
- Don't take things that aren't yours
- Say Sorry when you hurt someone's feelings
- Wash your hands before you eat
- Flush
- Warm cookies and milk are good for you
- Live a balanced life
- Learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work some everyday
- When you go into the world watch out for traffic
- Hold hands and stick together
- Be aware of wonder
- Take a nap every afternoon (one of my favorites)
Again, very simple rules but so applicable to what seems to be a very complicated world. I would add one more that would make the world a better place - Be Humble and Kind!
