Q&A with Jeremy Dartez, Senior Actuary, Workplace Solutions, Actuarial

Employers need employee benefit solutions that are designed and priced right.  Jeremy Dartez, who leads the Transamerica Employee Benefits Actuary team, can tell you that it’s their job to create models that allow us to build those types of valuable products in a sustainable way. By analyzing and managing financial risks, the actuary team makes sure we can be there when customers need us most – especially at the time of a claim.

We asked Jeremy to tell us more about how his actuarial team helps us offer benefits that middle-class Americans need:

Q: Is the job of an actuary an art or a science?

A: I wouldn’t say it’s an art exactly or straight science either. We’re mathematicians, statisticians, problem solvers, and strategists. It’s our job to make sure we’re managing our products over time. Our analyses can change consistently based on new technology (like digital enrollments), the nature of an evolving market, or changing regulations.

Q: How does your team support the brokers and employers who offer employee benefits from Transamerica?

A: With brokers, we make sure that we’re building our benefits in ways that work easily with ben admin systems, and we want them to know their clients are choosing a carrier that will sustain over time regardless of markets or trends. For employers, we help to create valuable products that can protect their employees over time.

 Q: Ultimately, how does your team help employees?

 A: We make sure we’re providing benefits that employees find valuable.

 Q: What is your favorite part of being an actuary?

A: When we launch a new or enhanced product and start seeing the comments of satisfied clients and new customer enrollments. It can take years for us to see if a product is successful, but when it is, it’s great to look at how all the pieces came together and know we had a part in it.

Q: How long have you been with Transamerica?

A: I have been with Transamerica for 10 years. I started working as an actuary on certain employee benefit products and then over the years I increased my experience to where I now manage our portfolio of employee benefit products.

Q: Why do you enjoy working at Transamerica?

A: I’m able to use my mathematical background to help build products that can help people prepare for their future, and I get to work with great people. The people I work with make coming to work enjoyable and it’s really inspiring to see what we’re able to create.

Q: At Transamerica we create solutions to help people live their best life, what is something you do to live your best life?

A: Spending time with my wife and kids. I really appreciate the work-life balance Transamerica allows me to have to be able to be present for my family.
